Hyprcore vs Otter.ai

Otter.ai is a cloud transcription service. You access it through a web app, mobile app, or meeting bot integrations with Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams. Audio and transcripts live on Otter's servers; the product's strengths are its breadth of device support, its meeting bot integrations, and its enterprise tooling.

Hyprcore is a native macOS app that bundles three features: meeting recording (system audio + mic), system-wide dictation, and an AI wiki. The Free tier includes a local speech model that runs on Apple Silicon, so meetings and dictation can be transcribed fully on-device.

Otter's reach is broad — anywhere there's a browser or a phone, you can use it. The cost is that there's no native macOS app: you're either in a browser tab or relying on a meeting bot to join your calls. Audio always transits Otter's infrastructure.

Hyprcore is the opposite trade-off. macOS only, no mobile apps, no Zoom bots — but a true native app with Apple Silicon GPU acceleration, system-level audio capture, and a global keyboard shortcut for dictation in any app. If your work happens on a Mac and you want a Mac-feeling product, that's the bet.

If you primarily capture meetings from your phone or need a Zoom bot to join calls you don't attend, Otter is the right choice. If you're at your Mac and want a focused workspace, Hyprcore is.

Otter has no on-device path. All transcription happens on Otter's servers. For regulated industries — legal, medical, financial, IP-sensitive R&D — that's a structural compliance question that even Otter's enterprise compliance plans frame around their own infrastructure.

Hyprcore's Free tier includes a local speech model. Pro adds optional cloud STT (Deepgram, Groq) for users who want hosted-model speed and accuracy on noisy audio, switchable per-recording. Nothing transits a cloud service unless you opt into it.

Otter's privacy policy lists, among the purposes it uses your data for, "training our proprietary AI technology on de-identified audio recordings and on transcriptions (which may contain Personal Information)." Their privacy page explains the method: a proprietary de-identification step, automatic, with no human review, and encrypted training data.

Third-party models are excluded — "No customer data will be used to train or improve our AI Service Provider(s)' artificial intelligence models/algorithms" — which is a real commitment, the same one Fathom and Granola make.

The difference is where the off switch lives. Otter documents opting out of model training as an Enterprise workspace property, and there it is the default: "Enterprise workspaces are opted out of AI model training by default… To opt your workspace into AI model training, contact your Otter account manager." We could not find a documented self-serve opt-out on Basic, Pro, or Business. We are not going to claim none exists — an undocumented control is not the same as a missing one — but if you are on a personal plan and want out, you have nothing published to point at.

With Hyprcore's local model the audio never reaches a server, so this is not a setting you have to find or a tier you have to buy.

Otter is meeting-only. If you also want dictation in any app and a place to keep structured notes, you'll add Wispr Flow + Notion (or similar) on top.

Hyprcore consolidates: meetings, streaming dictation, an AI wiki, screen-and-mic recording notes, and web captures share the same workspace, the same login, and the same Knowledge Base. A global ⌘K palette spans everything, and an Agent tab on the Knowledge page can search, read, and write in the vault for you. If you currently pay for Otter + Wispr Flow + Notion, Hyprcore is built to replace all three on a Mac.

Dictation here isn't only transcription. Action Mode lets you say "Hyper" plus an instruction and have Hyprcore run it against your selected text — "Hyper, make this shorter" rewrites the selection rather than typing the words out. Otter has no comparable feature; it isn't trying to be a text-input tool at all.

Otter Basic is free, Pro is $16.99 per user per month ($8.33 billed annually), and Business is $30 per user per month ($19.99 annually). Prices are quoted in USD on Otter's pricing page, which is more than most vendors in this category bother to specify.

The free tier is where Otter's limits bite, and they are specific: 300 minutes of transcription per month with no rollover, a 30-minute ceiling per conversation, three file imports total for the life of the account, and only your 25 most recent conversations visible — older ones are archived rather than deleted. Otter is also explicit that deleted conversations still count against the monthly minutes. Five meetings a week of any length will exhaust it.

One more thing worth knowing before a compliance conversation: Otter's HIPAA compliance is an Enterprise-only add-on arranged through an account manager, and custom data retention is Enterprise-only too. Hyprcore does not offer a BAA at all, so if you need one, Otter Enterprise is an answer here and Hyprcore is not.
