Say the whole prompt instead of the short version
The difference between a useless answer and a good one is usually two sentences of context you could not be bothered to type.
Free tier runs on-device. macOS 14+ on Apple Silicon or Intel.
Workflow
What to use voice for in ChatGPT
- Setting the scene before the question: what you are building, on what, and what constraints are fixed
- Describing an error in your own words alongside the stack trace you pasted
- Follow-up turns that correct one assumption without restating the entire problem
- Writing custom instructions, which are worth more effort than most people give them
- Talking through a half-formed idea until the question you actually have becomes clear
Friction
Where typing slows ChatGPT down
- Typing four sentences of setup feels like work, so people ask the one-line version and get a generic answer
- By turn three you are repeating context you already gave, because retyping it is faster than scrolling up
- The details that matter most — versions, limits, what you already ruled out — are the most tedious to type
- Thinking out loud is how the real question surfaces, and a text box does not reward that
Examples
Things you would actually say
Spoken out loud, at normal pace. The words below are the input, not the output — Hyprcore types them where your cursor already is.
“I am on Next.js sixteen with the app router, deployed on Vercel, and a server action is timing out at ten seconds when it hits a slow third-party API. I already tried moving it into a route handler and streaming the response, and neither helped. What would you look at next, and is this even the right shape for the problem?”
“The trace above is a TypeError, cannot read properties of undefined, reading map. It only fires on a hard refresh of the orders page, never on client navigation, and only for accounts with no orders yet. My guess is the loading state, but I have not proved it.”
“That is close, but assume the table has around two million rows and the query runs inside a web request. Give me the keyset cursor version rather than offset pagination, and tell me exactly which index I need to add.”
Prompt quality is mostly a length problem
Nobody sets out to under-specify. They start typing, realise the full picture is another minute of keyboard work, and quietly trim it down to the part they can type quickly. The model then answers the trimmed question well, which is worse than answering the real one badly, because you have to notice the mismatch yourself.
Spoken, that same context takes about twenty seconds and costs you nothing in effort, so you stop editing it down. Hyprcore streams the text into the prompt box phrase by phrase while you speak, which matters here more than it looks: you can see the prompt accumulating and keep adding constraints until it reads complete, rather than talking into a void and reviewing at the end.
It works the same in the ChatGPT desktop app for Mac and in ChatGPT on the web, because Hyprcore is not integrated with either. It types into the focused field, which on that screen is the prompt box. The custom instructions panel, incidentally, is worth dictating too, and it is the field most people fill in once and never revisit.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work in the ChatGPT Mac app as well as the browser?
Both, and neither is a special case. Hyprcore inserts text wherever the cursor is, so the desktop app's prompt box, the web composer and the custom instructions fields are all just text fields to it. Nothing is connected to your OpenAI account.
Is there a limit on how long a single dictation can be?
Nothing that a normal prompt runs into. You hold or toggle the shortcut and speak, and the text keeps arriving; long stretches of thinking aloud tend to end because you paused, not because the app stopped. Very long unbroken monologues are worth breaking into a few passes anyway, if only so you can read what you said.
Does my audio go to OpenAI?
No. Transcription happens before anything reaches the prompt box, and the free tier uses an on-device model on Apple Silicon, so the recording stays on your Mac. Pro adds optional cloud transcription through Deepgram or Groq if you want it for noisy rooms, and you pick which one runs.
Can it read the answer back or click things in ChatGPT for me?
No. Hyprcore puts words into a field and, with Action Mode, rewrites text you have selected. It does not read the screen, drive the interface or send your message, so pressing return is still your decision.
