What to use voice for in Google Docs

Where typing slows Google Docs down
- A blank doc punishes you for starting badly, so you start slowly or not at all
- The reasoning belongs in comments, and reasoning takes more words than most people will type into a small box
- Typing sits close enough to editing that you rewrite sentence one six times before reaching sentence two
- Collaborative drafting stalls on whoever holds the context being the slowest typist in the doc

The first draft is the part worth making faster
Spoken prose comes out looser than typed prose. In most contexts that is a flaw. In a first draft it is the whole trick, because a loose complete paragraph is far easier to edit than a tight one is to conjure from an empty page. You get the argument down while you still have it in your head, and you fix the wording after.
The text builds a clause at a time as you speak, which is what keeps you moving forward instead of circling. Docs has its own voice typing and it is worth knowing the shape of it: Chrome, and the body of the document. Hyprcore is indifferent to which field it is writing into, so a comment box, a reply to a suggestion, the document title, and Safari or Arc all behave identically.
The second pass is where Action Mode comes in. Select the paragraph you just spoke, give it an instruction like "tighter" or "less formal," and the instruction runs against the selected words rather than being typed among them. It writes over what was there, so Docs version history is the safety net worth remembering.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as Google Docs voice typing?
Docs voice typing lives in Chrome and writes into the body of the document. Hyprcore is a Mac app that writes at the insertion point, wherever that happens to be, which covers any browser, comment boxes, the title field, and every other application on the machine. Custom vocabulary and Action Mode come with it.
Does it work in comments and suggesting mode?
Yes. Hyprcore has no idea it is dealing with Docs, it simply puts characters where the cursor is. With the doc in suggesting mode, what you speak arrives as a suggestion, for the same reason typed characters do.
Can I rewrite a paragraph by voice instead of retyping it?
That is Action Mode. Select the paragraph, say the wake word and then something like "in plain English" or "half the length," and the selected words are swapped for the result. Because it overwrites the selection rather than appending, Docs version history is worth knowing about before you use it on a paragraph you care about.
Do I need a Chrome extension or approval from a Workspace admin?
Neither. Hyprcore installs as a macOS app and asks for the microphone and typing permissions macOS requires. There is no browser extension, no Docs add-on, and no OAuth connection to your Google account for an admin to review.
